How is this different from Wondercide or Murphy's Naturals?

The difference is the dose. Wondercide uses around 1% geraniol. Murphy's leads with Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE), which has its own concentration considerations and isn't approved for kids under three. Trailside uses 3% geraniol. Three times the concentration of the leading natural brand.

The CDC's 2024 study tested commercial 25(b) plant-based repellents and found most provided short durations of protection The dosing was the gap. We closed it.

How long does one application last?

Up to two hours of plant-powered protection per application. Reapply every one to two hours when you're outdoors, especially after sweating, swimming, or toweling off.

Plant-derived actives are volatile by nature, which is why they need more frequent reapplication than DEET. This is the same trade-off you make with mineral sunscreen, you reapply, and you stay protected.

Is it really safe for my baby?

Trailside is formulated to be safe on children 6 months and older. We use no synthetic chemicals, no DEET, no parabens, no isopropyl myristate, and no synthetic fragrance.

Does it really work against Lone Star ticks?

Geraniol — the primary active in Trailside, has been studied in peer-reviewed research for its repellent activity against Amblyomma americanum (the Lone Star tick). The 2024 paper in Parasites & Vectors specifically evaluated geraniol against this species. Our 3% concentration is among the highest available in the natural-spray category.

No repellent gives 100% protection. We recommend combining Trailside with standard tick-prevention practices: long pants, tick checks, avoiding tall grass.

What does it smell like?

A fresh blend of cedarwood, rosemary, lemongrass, and peppermint with a touch of natural citrus. Most customers describe it as "outdoorsy" rather than chemical. The initial scent fades within 20-30 minutes while the protection keeps working.

Will it stain clothes or damage gear?
